Did you know that malls are more than a century old? This way of shopping was first conceived all the way back in 1922, with the first mall being opened in Kansas City. These malls were a lot different to what we know today. For starters, they were far smaller. It was only in the 1980s that malls truly took off and became the gigantic complexes we know today. Since then malls have only grown in size and complexity. For example, if you’re planning an international shopping trip, then here are some places you’ll definitely want to check out.

1. Iran Mall

Funnily enough, the world’s biggest mall is actually in Iran of all places. This gigantic shopping center features an incredible seven floors and has over 2,500 stores. In addition to this, there’s also a hotel for people who want to extend their shopping expedition.

2. South China Mall

The world’s second biggest mall suffered a number of problems after its initial opening. The biggest being that it was built in a city with moderate incomes. This meant that for the first decade of its life, it sat almost practically empty. It was only after a major renovation that things started taking off.

3. SM Mall of Asia

Located in Manila in the Philippines, this mall is made up of four buildings containing over 1000 stores. Along with this you have the usual attractions found in a mall of this size. That includes things like an ice rink and IMAX movie theater.

4. SM Tianjin

Built by the same company who constructed the SM Mall of Asia, this shopping center is one of the biggest in the world. It covers an incredible 6 million square feet and contains a whopping 2500 stores.

5. Golden Resources Mall

As one of the biggest cities in the world, Beijing naturally has some of the world’s biggest malls. This includes the Golden Resources Mall, which was crowned the world’s largest mall when it opened in 2004.

6. ICONSIAM

Unlike the other malls on our list, ICONSIAM is dominated almost entirely by luxury brands. This includes familiar labels like Prada, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. In keeping with this luxury theme, there’s also a dock for private boats, as well as two high end apartment buildings connected to the mall.

7. Mall of America

Mall of America is one of only three megamalls located in the US. What makes this place special is it’s additional features. These include an indoor rollercoaster, an aquarium, waterpark, and comedy venue.

8.Global Harbor

Global Harbor is known for its sumptuous design. This includes things like glass domes, intricate cornices, and plenty of gold paint. According to locals, this has made the mall popular with tourists, as well as social media influencers.

9. Central Phuket

Phuket is one of the world’s premier tourist hot spots. The Central Phuket Mall was built to take advantage of this tourist trade and also provide a place for locals to shop. Spread over two buildings it features 800 shops, and other attractions like a theme park, aquarium, and spa.

10. The Dubai Mall

Dubai is known as an international shopping destination. Most of this takes place at The Dubai Mall. Along with more than 1200 stores, you’ll also find an opera house, aquarium, ice rink, and VR park.
